چکیده

To determine if salt tolerance of grafted cucumber can be associated with the accumulation of organic solutes and inorganic solutes in the leaves and roots, a salt-sensitive cucumber cultivar Jinchun No. 2 (Cucumis sativus L.) was grafted onto the commercial salt-tolerant bottle gourd cultivar Chaofeng 8848 (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.). Grafted and ungrafted plants were grown in hydroponic systems and exposed to 0 or 100 mM NaCl stress under greenhouse conditions. The effects of NaCl stress on the shoot and root growth, organic solutes (soluble sugar and proline), malondialdehyde (MDA) and inorganic solutes (Na, K and Cl) contents, as well as K/Na ratio in the leaves and roots were determined at 0, 1, 4, 7 and 10 days after salt treatment. The results showed that salt resistance of cucumber plants can be enhanced by grafting, which is reflected in better shoot biomass production. In the roots, the grafted plants had higher accumulation of soluble sugar and proline, almost the same Na and Cl, higher K content and higher K/Na ratio, but lower MDA content in comparison to the ungrafted plants during most of the stress period under salt stress. In the leaves, the grafted plants had higher accumulation of soluble sugar and proline, but lower contents of Na and Cl (especially Na), and higher K content as well as higher K/Na ratio but lower MDA content in comparison to the ungrafted plants under salt stress. Taken together, these results suggested that the improved salt tolerance of grafted cucumber induced by rootstock is related to the re-establishment of homeostasis between organic and inorganic saline solutes in the leaves.

Ion content and its correlation with some physiological parameters in olive cultivars in response to salinity

ABSTRACT- Olive (Olea europaea L.) is one of the most valuable and widespread fruit trees in Iran. Salt stress-induced changes in membrane stability, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activity were examined on four olive cultivars (Dakal, Shiraz, Zard and Amigdalifolia) by emphasizing the correlation between measured parameters and ion (K+, Na+) accumulation. Plants were subjected to four s...

Effect of Cucurbita Rootstocks and Water Deficit on Growth Properties and Yield of Cucumber

Water supply in arid and semiarid regions of the world is a serious problem in crop production. Grafting may enhance water stress resistance and plants growth. In order to evaluate the effect of different cucurbit rootstocks (Flexifort, Shintoza and ungrafted cucumber) and water stress (40, 60, 90% of field capacity) on morphologic traits and yield of greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. var...

In order to evaluate responses of a pistachio seedling rootstock (Pistacia vera L. cv. Ghazvini) to NaCl induced salinity stress and potential protective role of exogenous spermine and spermidine on NaCl induced salinity stress, a greenhouse experiment was conducted during growing season of 2009. The NaCl treatments, involving 800, 1600, and 3200 mg NaCl per Kg of soil for 90 days, suppressed g...

Changes of glutamine and asparagine content in cucumber seedlings in response to nitrate stress

Nitrogen fertilizer application rates in intensive agricultural systems have increased dramatically in recent years, especially in protected vegetable production systems. This excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer has resulted in soil secondary salinity, which has become a significant environmental stress for crops such as cucumber, in the protected farmlands. It is thus necessary to illuminate ...
